While waiting for Jasmine Bhasin’s speedy recovery, you should quickly update yourself about the possible cause of corneal injury and its symptoms so that you can avoid this condition.

WHAT IS CORNEAL ABRASION?

A corneal abrasion is an eye injury caused by a scratch or abrasion on the surface of the cornea. A person’s fingernails, contact lenses, or other foreign objects can all cause a corneal abrasion.

The cornea is a clear, protective dome on the surface of the eye that protects the eye from foreign substances. It also bends and focuses light to help people see. Reflexes such as blinking and rapid eye closure normally protect the eye from damage. However, certain events occur before these defences kick in, causing a cut or scratch on the cornea.

SYMPTOMS OF CORNEAL ABRASION

A scratched cornea is often very painful; watery, red eyes and hypersensitivity to light.

The cornea is one of the most sensitive organs in your body, so even a very small abrasion on the cornea can be very painful and feel much larger in size – as if there is a large, rough object in your eye.

Apart from pain and the sensation of a gritty or foreign object, other symptoms of a corneal abrasion include redness, tearing, sensitivity to light, headache, blurred or decreased vision, eye twitching, mild pain and sometimes nausea.

If you think you have a corneal abrasion and are experiencing any of these symptoms, see your nearest eye doctor immediately.

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF CORNEAL INJURIES

Corneal injuries to the eyes can occur for many different reasons, including:

1.Abrasion

A corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch on the cornea, called the window of the eye. It can be scratched by sand, wood, metal particles, dust, dirt, a contact lens or even the edge of a piece of paper. Common symptoms of a corneal abrasion include pain, blurred vision, tearing, redness, photophobia (sensitivity to light) and headache.

2.Chemical contact

Any contact with acids, alkalis or other chemicals can damage the cornea. This usually happens when your eyes come into contact with a liquid. However, it can also happen from rubbing your eyes while handling chemicals. If there is redness or you feel a burning sensation, you should talk to your doctor immediately. It can also trigger symptoms such as stinging, pain, swelling of the eyelids, blurred vision or watery eyes.

3.Contact lenses

Overuse, poor hygiene or fitting, or prolonged lens wear can cause corneal abrasions or infections. Although most of these problems are considered reversible, if it does not resolve, you need to consult a doctor.

4.Dry eyes

Dry eyes are a common condition that occurs when your tears are not enough to lubricate your eyes. This condition can be very uncomfortable. Severe dry eyes can lead to eye inflammation, abrasions of the corneal surface, corneal ulcers, and vision loss if left untreated.

5.UV radiation

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can cause corneal irritation (photokeratitis). Continuous exposure to UV rays can damage the cornea and conjunctiva of the eyes.

HOW ARE CORNEAL ABRASIONS TREATED?

Treatment options for corneal abrasions include: Moisturizing eye drops (artificial tears) or ointments –  These increase comfort by soothing the cornea. A special type of dilating eye drop called cycloplegic can relieve light sensitivity.

Contact lens bandage – our doctor may give you a special contact lens that acts like a bandage over your eye. It’s important to avoid wearing your regular contact lenses until your eye heals.

Additionally, closing your eyes will reduce irritation to the injured area.

Please read all this and keep it in mind so that you all stay safe.
