In the first poster, Vikrant Massey, Taapsee Pannu and Sunny Kaushal can be seen, all three are drenched in rain with blood drops. And Vikrant and Taapsee are also shown under an umbrella, meanwhile Sunny is seen holding a bouquet of roses in one hand and holding Taapsee’s hand.

A young woman, a fan of crime thriller novels, is accused of plotting the gruesome murder of her husband. But as the investigation delves into her tumultuous married life and a torrid love affair, what seemed like an open and shut case turns into a complex mystery.
Rani’s (Taapsee Pannu) married life has a lot less action than the gritty crime novels she’s a fan of. While Rani is fiery and seductive with a history of multiple affairs, her husband Rishu (Vikrant Massey) is a good guy who always follows the rules. But soon Rani’s seemingly simple life gets a lot more action than she expected when Rishu’s cousin Neel (Harshvardhan Rane) comes to stay with them for a few days.
Director Vinil Mathew and writer Kanika Dhillon take us into a completely different world of Rani and Rishu, which has the simplicity and ease of a small town and at the same time, a feeling of impending disaster. This in itself gives the underlying sense of tension and constant suspense.
This makes it quite engaging, entertaining and unpredictable for the most part, as we watch the lead characters go through their journey of love, lust and desires. There might be a point where you would have understood the plot, but that would not be a big spoiler.
Because at the heart of this intriguing love story are strong emotions and flawed characters. Like the strong and determined Rani, played skilfully by Taapsee Pannu. A lot of the suspense of the film hinges on Taapsee’s pitch-perfect expressions and the way she deals with the uneasy graph of her character. It is difficult to understand and hence difficult to play, but Taapsee has made it look effortless. She makes Rani charming and alluring with conviction and not at all obnoxious.
Vikrant Massey is aptly cast as the suave but outspoken Rishu, who speaks little but says a lot with his eyes. Kanika has given him ample scope to grow through a well-etched character and narrative that builds slowly but steadily. He also gets a chance to speak colourful dialogues (Ankana Joshi) for the fictional novelist ‘Panditji’. Harshvardhan Rane has done well within the scope of his limited repertoire.
Among the character actors, Yamini Das as Rishu’s shrewd mother brings good comic relief and innocence. The music (Amit Trivedi) and cinematography (Jaykrishna Gummadi) compliment the contrasting tone of the film.
‘Haseen Dillruba’ has some moments of being absurd and unbelievable but it never stops being a captivating dark and rebellious love story with a thrilling twist.
