Theme and Significance of World Population Day

It is an annual event, which is celebrated on the 11th of July every year

The Day was suggested by Dr. K.C. Zachariah in which population reached % billion when he worked as Sir Demographer at the World Bank.

The main motive to celebrate this is to raise awareness of global population issues such as gender equality, family planning, poverty, human rights, and maternal health.

The event was established in 1989 by the governing council of the United States. This time the theme of world population day is “Rights and choices are the answers: whether baby boom or bust the solution to shifting fertility rates lies in prioritizing all people’s reproductive health and rights.”

Every year the UN council decides the theme of World Population day but in 2019 specifically, a specific theme was not decided and called for global attention to the unfinished business of 1994’s international conference on development and population.

Every year the world observes the world population day on July 11.

The world population almost took hundreds and thousands of years to reach one billion but then it increased sevenfold in just another 200 years and so on.

In 2011 the world population passed the 7 billion barriers and now it is approx. 7.7 billion with the hope of increasing to around 8.5 billion in 2030 to 9.7 billion in 2050and approx. 10.9 billion in 2100 and so on.

On July 11, every year the world observes world population day to draw attention to the difficulties that are created by overpopulation and the main motive is to spread awareness about how bad the impact overpopulation will have on our economy and humanity.

In recent past years, there were enormous changes in life expectancy and fertility rates.

In the 1970s, the average number of children women had was 4.5 each but by 2015 the total number of fertility had fallen to below 2.5 children per woman but during the same time, the average global lifespan has risen from 6406 years in the early 1990s to 72.6 years in 2019.

With this great celebration on this high level, cam encourages people to take part in the world population day and can get to know about the issues like family planning, gender equality, poverty increasing population. Sex education human rights, health education child marriage. Girl education adolescent pregnancy sexually transmitted infections. Safety measures during sex and many more.

2021 is the second year of covid 19, the health care system has been compromised in a pandemic, particularly in the area of reproductive and sexual health, where the other part of the world is going from the deep break of the pandemic, while on the other hand many other countries are locked up in the battle with the virus.

As per the research of UNFPA in March. An estimated value of 120million women has experienced disruptions to family planning and services.

According to Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General has this sustainable development agenda for 2030, is to have the world’s blueprint for a better future for all on a healthy planet, although we realize that this mission is now closely interrelated with demographic trends including population growth, migration, aging, and urbanization.

The main issue of the world population is sexuality-related issues. These issues are very necessary to solve especially among the youth, especially to those who are between the ages of 15 to 20 years.

The world population has now become an international event and celebrated by various countries. In this event, various countries’ organizations try their best to draw attention to the major issue which is related to population.

On this day various activities are organized that include seminars, discussions, public contests, educational sessions, workshops, debates, rallies, etc. even many TV channels and shows, news channels, and other platforms show programs related to population day and the importance of population.
