The soldiers set up brothels with the women they enslaved during the invasion. It became a center of prostitution during the British rule.
During the British rule, the diamond market gradually started losing its shine. The British gave the name of prostitution to tawaifs. As a result, these localities kept getting infamous. They forcefully forced courtesans to become sex workers.
People hesitate even to say the name Heera Mandi
At present, the situation is such that people feel ashamed to even mention the name of this place openly in Lahore. In the evening, the Shahi Mohalla here gets lit up. Customers arrive here and are seen looking for sex workers. Brokers are seen for the deal. According to the report of Pakistan newspaper Dawn, the women who came here once under compulsion and became sex workers, then the next generations got involved in this work.
Different claims of courtesans
There have been different claims of courtesans on the atmosphere prevailing in Hiramandi. There are many women here who only do mujra. She claims that she never got into the business of prostitution. kept himself away from it. Life has been going on only by performing mujras between 11 am and 1 am. This work has been carried forward from generation to generation. She says, we oppose prostitutes. At the same time, there are some women who say, we have become sex workers to feed. This is our livelihood.
