The first ship of Project 17A, Nilgiri, was launched on 28th September 2019 and is expected for ocean trials within the, to begin with, half of 2024. The second ship – Udaygiri – was launched in May this year and is expected to begin ocean trials during the second half of 2024.

New Delhi: Taragiri, the third stealth frigate of Project 17A, was launched on Sunday by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) – a ministry of defense undertaking. The ship has been built using an integrated development technique which includes hull block development in totally different geological areas and integration/erection on Slipway at MDL, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said in a statement.

About Project 17A:
- The pined for ‘Project 17A’ was cleared by the govt back in 2015.
- It includes the building of seven stealth frigates at an evaluated fetched of Rs 50,000 crore. Of these seven, the contract for three frigates was granted to GRSE whereas the contract for another four frigates was granted to Government-owned Mazagon Docks Constrained (MDL) which is based in Mumbai.
- These frigates will come equipped with progressed state-of-the-art sensors and a gloat of top-notch stealth features.
