At least 44 dead, many injured in Indonesia earthquake: Official

A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake killed at least 62 people, with hundreds injured and others lost, when it toppled buildings and triggered landslides on Indonesia’s main island of Java on Monday, authorities said.
Doctors treated patients outdoors after the tremor, which was felt as far away as the capital Jakarta, cleared out clinics within the West Java town of Cianjur without control for several hours.
Indonesia’s disaster mitigation organization said 25 individuals remained caught beneath the rubble as the rescue mission extended into the night.
In videos widely shared on social media which could not be verified independently, buildings could be seen shaking during the earthquake.

Authorities said they had protected two individuals trapped in a landslide in Cianjur but a third individual had died.

Herman Suherman, the head of the organization in Cianjur town, said most wounds were bone breaks maintained from individuals being caught by flotsam and jetsam in buildings.

Indonesia’s nearby media appeared a few buildings in Cianjur with their rooftops collapsed. The country’s meteorological organization cautioned inhabitants to close the shake to be careful with more tremors.
